Thermal and morphological study of poly(acrylamide-co-diallyldimethylammonium chloride)/nanoclay composite films

nanoclay, PAADDA, composite film



Poly(acrylamide-co-diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PAADDA) /nanoclay composite films with different nanoclay (NC) contents (3, 5 and 7 wt%) were obtained by solvent casting method. Composite films were characterized by means of infrared vibrational spectroscopy with Fourier transform (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis coupled with mass spectrometry (TGA-MS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). FTIR spectra of PAADDA/NC composites showed that the NC particles were incorporated into the PAADDA matrix. PAADDA/NC composites exhibited microcomposite structure as observed by XRD. TGA-MS curves revealed an increase in the thermal stability of PAADDA in the presence of NC particles. The gaseous products obtained from the thermal degradation of pristine PAADDA and PAADDA/NC composites were H2O (m/z = 18), NO (m/z = 30) and CO2 (m/z = 44). The surface morphology of the PAADDA/NC composite films are rougher than pristine PAADDA film.
